Now is the time to find the best discounts on airfare.  All the travel agencies, travel websites, and airlines are competing against each other to offer the best deals on tickets.  It is a fairly easy task to search most of the ticket sellers prices and find the best one, as long as you have a small amount of patience. The best place to start is at the websites of the major airlines.  They give out special deals from time to time, especially if you buy directly from their website.  Be sure to check them regularly.  If none of them appeal to you much, at least take a note of their prices before continuing your search.

Next, try searching websites which offer a database of all fares online, like Kayak or Sidestep.  This makes it very easy to find the best price, and saves you all the time of having to search every single website.

These database websites are causing some trouble for some websites, Travelocity in particular.  They restricted the access to their database of fares because they were losing money.  So, it would be beneficial to check large travel websites, including Orbitz and Expedia to see what prices you can find there.

One techinque to use, if you have the time to do this, is to check airfares at certain times each day.  Try 7 in the morning, 4 in the afternoon and at 10 or 11 before you go to bed.  You will discover some interesting trends if you do this for a few days.  Prices checked in the morning may drop dramatically by the end of the day.  The key to this technique is to keep chedking back regularly.  A little luck helps too.

If you have not picked a certain date for your flight yet, try searching for flexible prices.  You will be able to find the dates with the lowest fares and you can pick your date that way as well as your fare.

Always try to get your ticket far in advance of the actual flight date, at least a couple weeks.  Traveling during the downtime seasons also helps.  Almost all airlines give discounts for using these techniques.
